Lesson Duration/Dates: two 45 minute lessons

Grade Level of Students: 6th

School: Lakewood Middle School

CooperatingTeacher’s name: Michael Harvey

Anticipatory Set:

In his classroom there is a lot of reading and book work that they do. To change it up I made a PowerPoint and I didn’t have them do book work or read. It was a participation and question based presentation.

Lesson Objective:They should learn about the Shang dynasty: the government, army, religion, art, oracle bones, social class, writing, and bronze. Also how it came to an end and how it was found by archeologist.

Standards Addressed and expectations of students:

In this unit students will compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of China’s dynasties. They will investigate new inventions and technology in China and their impact on society. They will investigate the growth of Buddhism and its increasing influence on life in China during the Sui and Tang dynasties. Students will analyze the impact of trade on China and other nations, including their exports of tea, rice, silk, spices, and jade. They will examine the influence of Confucianism on the government. Students will evaluate dynastic cycles in China.

Teaching/Instructional Process:

There is not much technology used in this classroom so I decided to make a PowerPoint and put it up on the big projector. I did a PowerPoint because I wanted to get away from the routine reading/lecture then book work they do. First, l reviewed with them the geography of China asking them where certain land features are located on the map and having them point them out. Then, we talked about how archeologists discovered the Shang dynasty. Then we discussed the achievements such as religion, oracle bones, writing, bronze, government, army, social classes, and end with how the Shang dynasty came to an end.I am trying to get the students to participate and ask lots of questions. I am not having them take notes or do bookwork because they do that a lot. I set up the PowerPoint to be very brief so discussions and questions would spark in the students. There were very many questions and we got into depth about many of the topics. We got so in depth that we had to spend another day finishing this topic.

Guided Practice/Monitoring:

The PowerPoint is very brief and has a lot of pictures. This led to a lot of questions and discussions about all the topics. The students would ask questions and other students would answer. I will have them take a short quiz in their workbook once we get through all the material.

Closure:

This lesson is just the beginning of the chapter about Ancient China and leads to another dynasty that overtook the Shang dynasty. I will end this lesson by telling them how the Shang dynasty was defeated.

Independent Practice/Collaboration:

This lesson is a collaborative lesson because I want the students to ask lots of questions so we can get more in depth about each topic. The students asked a lot of questions which lead to more questions which lead to more information they got. They liked being able to discuss and be able to participate in the lesson.

Technology Integration:

Most of the time the teacher will give a lecture or have them read from the book and then fill out worksheets. I wanted to get the students to participate in the lesson so I made a PowerPoint. I think the students were very into the lesson because there was a ton of discussions and questions.
