 Student Instructor                                               Name: __Cole Denzin____

Lesson Duration/Dates: 25 minutes 2/28/14

Grade Level of Students: Sixth Grade

School: Lakewood Middle School

Cooperating Teacher’s name: Michael Harvey

Anticipatory Set:

I introduced the lesson by giving them starburst and telling them the strict rules that were put in place for today.

Lesson Objective:

The students should learn that legalism is one of the three Chinese philosophies. Also who discovered legalism and how it works.

Standards Addressed and expectations of students:

• Ideas: Confucianism, Daoism, Legalism, diffusion of Buddhism, dynasty

• People/Roles: Confucius, Shi Huangdi

• Places/Institutions: Huang He River, Yangzi River, Great Wall, Silk Road

• Events: Shang Dynasty, Zhou Dynasty, Qin Dynasty, Han Dynasty, acupuncture,

Teaching/Instructional Process:

  • I wrote 3 rules on the board:

  1.         No talking

  2.         No eating candy

  3.         Don’t not move on after I call time.

  • I gave them 5 starburst each.

  • I had them read until I said stop and answer questions from a worksheet. If they did not finish the reading or question I took a starburst.

  • I gave them starburst for good behavior and completing the question.

  • I took starburst if they weren’t following rules or showing bad behavior. I gave them starburst if they doing the work and/or had good behavior.

  • After finishing the reading, we went through the questions and reading again and discussed legalism.I gave each students 5 starburst at the end.

Guided Practice/Monitoring:

To make sure that the students were learning what they needed to know I used examples of how students got their starburst taken away and compared to Ancient China and legalism. I could see that most students caught on to what I was doing when they got their starburst taken away and from what other students were doing to get starbursts taken away or what they were doing to gain starburst.

Closure:

To end this lesson I compared what the students did to gain or lose starburst and what ancient Chinese did to get kicked out of the kingdom or get a death sentence. I also gave starburst to every student even the ones that got all theres taken away. They had time at the end to work on the homework that went with the three philosophies and in the homework was a quiz about legalism and the two other philosophies. We will discuss the quiz and see what students still need to know about legalism, Daoism, and Confucianism.

Independent Practice/Collaboration:

This lesson was an independent lesson because I wanted to get the point across about legalism and how it strict it was. They could not talk because one point of legalism is that society doesn’t have a say in government. At the end, when they were working on homework they were allowed to work together and talk to help each other. Technology Integration:

There was no technology used in this lesson due to that it was hard to find a lesson plan about legalism and teaching the meaning of it. The way I presented it was the best way I could find.
