Lesson Plan 3

LESSON DESIGN                                Student Instructor Name: Cole Denzin

Lesson Duration/Dates: 12/4/13 small groups of 15 minutes

Grade Level of Students: 4th grade

School: Cedar Hills Elementary

Cooperating Teacher’s name: Mr. Monsees

Anticipatory Set:

I will have the iPad’s out and tell them that we will be using them

Lesson Objective:

The students should learn word problems that have extra and/or not enough information in them and how to solve them.

Standards Addressed and expectations of students:

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.1

Teaching/Instructional Process:

  • I will have a group of 5 or 6 students and each will get an IPad.

  • On the IPad is a white board app that they can do their work on.

  • I will hand them a worksheet that I made up.

  • I will have them go through the worksheet and work out the problems then have them show me the answers on their iPad when they are done.

  • I will tell them they can ask me or another student in the group if they have any questions. I will also walk around the group making sure that no student is struggling.

Guided Practice/Monitoring:

I will monitor the students by if they show me the correct answer and if not look through their work and try to help them as much as I can. I will also collect the worksheets at the end that they put their final answers on.

Closure:

This lesson is just for extra practice. It gives a chance for the students that are struggling to get more one on one time with a teacher. There is no closure because I don’t want the students to rush through it and make mistakes. I want them to understand for the test they will take later on that week.

Independent Practice/Collaboration:

This is an independent and collaborative lesson because I want the students to work together or ask me if they any questions. This lesson is just for practice or to get any questions they have answered. It is independent because they will all be doing their own work.

Technology Integration:

In the small group each student will get an IPad. They will use the whiteboard app on there to do their work if they choose but they will write their final answer on the IPad and show me before they move on to the next question.
