Today I watched the video Adora Svitak: What Adults Can Learn from Children. The reason I chose this video was because I have realized that you can learn a lot from kids and that they can have one of the biggest impacts on your life.

This video was of a 12 year old girl, Adora Svitak, who was giving a speech in front of hundreds of people. She talked about how adults can learn from children. That a teacher shouldn’t be in front of the class the whole time teaching the students, the students should teach the teacher. She also said that one day all the children are going to be the next generation of adults and they are going to be the working force of America and of the world.

I think she is absolutely correct. Adults can learn a lot when they spend a lot of time with kids. Also, that one day they will be the adults and they will take over all the jobs.

As a future teacher I think it is important for kids to help you. For example, have the children help other classmates and not always ask the teacher for help. They can learn a lot of learning techniques that way. Also, don’t always be feeding  them a load of information, have the kids use problem solving skills to try and learn the material.

Read an article of your choice from the October 2013 issue of the Kappan.

My Response:

I read the article Academic Learning +Social-Emotional Learning=National Priority from the October 2013 Kappan magazine. The reason I choose this article was because students go through a lot of situations through there grade school years. I don’t remember learning anything on how to deal with these situations.

This article was about how schools, grade K-12, should enter a program called SEL. Social and Emotional learning. This program helps students with their attitudes, manage their emotions, set goals, establish and maintain relationships, and decision making. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, or CASEL, has been trying to promote the SEL program almost 20 years.

My thoughts on this article are that would it be good for students to learn these skills because it can help them through their whole life. If they enter SEL into the school or district’s curriculum and they teach these skills at a young age and throughout the student’s high school career, the students will have better skills than most other students that did not have this program.

As a future educator I think this program would be very helpful for students and I would want to teach my students these skills so they can be as successful as possible during their grade school career and even later on life
